CCS at Summit Point

July 19 - 20, 1997

The Championship Cup Series (CCS) came to Summit Point for the second time this season, but it was anything but a routine weekend. The recent heat wave was lessened somewhat by rain Friday night, and clear blue skies provided two great days of racing.

Repeated cautions of newly painted white sealer on Turns 3, 4, and 5 kept speeds down during most of Saturday, but as the line developed, so did the corner speeds. By the end of Saturday, racers were again going full bore around the track. Another novelty was the addition of Legend Car racing, practicing during the lunch break and racing at the end of the day.

The obvious highlight of the weekend was David Yaakov's record breaking win during the Unlimited GP race on Sunday. Yaakov's first several laps were solidly in the 1:18 region, but it wasn't until mid -race when he turned his record-breaking 1:17.67 lap time. The rest of the race, as well as the subsequent Unlimited Superbike race, Yaakov rode consistent 1:17 laps, but failed to better his record-setting pace.

After given the lead by Joe Wooten (13) who crashed on the same lap in Turn 1, Darrell then hands it over to Michael Myers (10) due to an overcooked rear tire. Darrell and his bike walked away with only cosmetic damage. (945K JPG)
