MARRC Annual Awards Banquet

January 27, 2001
Laurel, MD

Couldn't make the MARRC banquet? Or perhaps you would like your memory refreshed? Here they are - photos from the MARRC awards banquet - the next best thing to being there. Special thanks to master photographer and member Dean Beasom for the photo work during the evening -- all those you see here are his work. For a full list of award winners and a recap of the banquet, go to the banquet page. Click on each photo below to see the enlargement.

Click to enlarge The faces of the MARRC Board of Directors for the 2000 and 2001 seasons. From left to right, VP Roger Bacon, President Roger Lyle, Rick Beggs, Wendy Leland, John Capen, David Rickman, Glen Ouye, Ryan Chapin, Treasurer Howard "Doc" Weiss, Secretary Randy Dalmas, and Tom Fitzpatrick. Leland and Rickman are stepping aside to make room for Tom and Ryan to step onto the board in 2001.
Click to enlarge Where else can you see such drama? The Bemisderfer family had every reason to expect Tim to be presented with an award, but his fiancee Nicole Biava had no idea she would get a presentation of her own! After Tim accepted the Heavyweight Expert of the Year award, he asked Nicole to join him at the podium. He then knelt down and proposed. As the photo shows, she happily accepted.
Click to enlarge Howard Weiss presents Randy Dalmas with the MARRC Cup for his work over the past four years on the MARRC website, and his efforts in publicizing the club. The award is voted on each year by the membership on the person who had made the greatest contribution to the sport and to MARRC. Each year a new recipient is voted for, and Randy will get to keep the large trophy until next year's banquet, when he will present it to the next recipient of the cup. The "smaller" trophy is his to keep.
Click to enlarge The past and present recipients of the MARRC Cup; a who's who of dedication to roadracing in the Mid-Atlantic area. A person can only be awarded the MARRC Cup once. In this photo, Randy has the distinction of being the tallest recipient of the MARRC Cup in the last decade. From left to right: Roger Bacon (1992), Al Wilcox (1991), Howard "Doc" Weiss (1999), Randy Dalmas, Roger Lyle (1988), Wendy Leland (1996), John Capen (1998), David Rickman (1993).
Click to enlarge Cornerworker of the Year Art Sears says a few words after recieving his award from last year's recipient, Brad Haskin. Although quiet and humble, Art stood out all season as he kept understaffed turns running smoothly, and setting a standard for everyone to live by. Art assisted with the critical job of repairing damaged radio equipment, repairing even equipment that the manufacturer said was hopeless, and created the on-line ballot for the MARRC website.
Click to enlarge Ron Peddicord (right) is congratulated by Roger Lyle for being selected as recipient of the Harry Morse Cup. The Morse Cup is selected by the MARRC Board of Directors, with direction from Judy Morse, to the person who best exemplified service to the sport and dedication over his lifetime. Ron has touched so many lives during his time in the sport that he was an easy selection.
Click to enlarge Simply put, the most dedicated people in the sport. Each of these people volunteered over 150 hours of time to the club during the 2000 season as cornerworkers. Everyone here participates not for glory or payment, but to help the sport grow and keep it safe. Nowhere can you find a better group of people. Each person was recognized for their efforts with a personalized MARRC fleece jacket.
Click to enlarge When someone talks about how good the MARRC Roadracing School (RRS) is, they are talking about all the outstanding work done by this group of people. Each RRS volunteer is awarded a personalized and embroidered MARRC fleece jacket. From left to right: Classroom instructor Steve Harris, Ron Peddicord, RRS Director Brian Summers, Chief Tech Inpsector Rick Beggs, Gwen and Sean Stringfield, Instructor Ryan Chapin, Instructor Steve Clark, Sharon Stringfield, Instructor Mike Kuster, Instructor Art Staples, and Dave Back.
Click to enlarge As Wendy Leland hands Chris Eklund his trophy, Chris shields his face from the brilliance of the Crash and Burn Award. Well, maybe not. Chris was still happy to accept the award after destroying at least one RS125 during the season and live to tell the tale, and is was no doubt in the running for the Hard Luck Award too. I'm certain Chris is more than happy with just one award.
Click to enlarge Tim Bemisderfer had quite an evening. Here he receives his second of three awards for the evening from Roger Lyle for the Professional Rider of the Year. Bemisderfer won several national championships at the WERA GNF. Tim also placed 15th overall in the FUSA Unlimited Superbike series, quite a feat after missing some of the west coast rounds.
Click to enlarge MARRC President Roger Lyle (right) presents David Yaakov with one of the President's Awards handed out during the evening. David not only had an outstanding race season in 2000, but he became a major influence on the club by sponsoring the MARRC Roadracing School as well. David went beyond the call of duty and supported the school on many fronts during the year.
Click to enlarge Quentin Mise (left) goes to hug presenter Randy Dalmas, instead of the usual photo pose, as he is announced as the recipient of the MW Expert Rider of the Year. Quentin was so stunned at learning he won the award, he almost refused to go to the podium. Although Quentin won four WERA championships, two aboard a Yamaha R6, he is better known for battling other Summit Point masters Tim Bemisderfer and Arthur Diaz in some epic races during the season.
Click to enlarge Michael Garofalo holds up his award for the MARRC MW Amateur of the Year. Michael was a demon on his Yamaha R6 all season, and was at the front of the pack in nearly every race along with his teammate Mark Reeser. By the end of the season, Michael was by far the fastest amateur at Summit Point.
Click to enlarge James Gaal (left) accepts the HW Amateur of the Year award from Tom Fitzpatrick.
Click to enlarge Roger Bacon presents a delighted Al Wilcox with his President's Award - a personalized MARRC jacket. The jacket not only has Al's name, but identifies him as National #49. That was his number during his days as a Harley-Davidson factory flat-track rider.
Click to enlarge Tuner of the Year Eric Knight now can relive the presentation of his award forever on video tape, and maybe a few others will now know what its like to receive an award at the MARRC banquet. John Capen heartily approves of Eric's inventiveness.
Click to enlarge Outgoing board member Wendy Leland presents the Vintage Rider of the Year award to Richard Lucas. A familiar face and respected rider in the vintage paddock at Summit Point, Rich has won the local RD championship and placed at the top of the regional championships for the last three years.
Click to enlarge Social Secretary Jeannie Dalmas thanks her staff for helping her during the season, and talks about the events planned for 2001. Jeannie is also responsible for sending flowers and checking up on injured members during the racing season. Coming up next is an outing to spend a night with the Frederick Keys.
Click to enlarge Bill Siemens thanks everyone for voting for him for the LW Amateur of the Year. The choice was exceptionally hard for the 200 season, since the Mid-Atlantic has long been a hotbed of LW racing, and now with the popularity of the SV650, has made racing even closer. Bill won the CCS LW Supersport national championship at Daytona, three CCS regional championships.
Click to enlarge Roadracing School Director Brian Summers highlights the achievements of the racing school. The school had record revenues, and was run over 5 weekends during the 2000 season. Not to mention a great staff.
Click to enlarge Newly added board member Ryan Chapin (right) happily presents the Twins Rider of the Year award to Bernie Huntt. Bernie had received the LW Amateur Rider of the Year for 1998, and had proven himself in the expert ranks during 2000.
Click to enlarge Why in the world would this photogenic couple want to be behind the camera? Mostly because they are the banquet photographers, Sue and Dean Beasom. Thanks for the great shots!
